Getting Somewhere

…and we move on in intense lethargy

hoping that, somewhere along the way, we will catch our breath

we put our nose to the grind stone day after day

believing in the myth that we’ll understand in the by and by

what it was all for in the first place

…but are we adding to the melody in this symphony

or are we part of the cacophony

the din that keeps the world spinning

in deafening tinnitus

…and what must we do

to sing in a way that is palatable to all the onlookers

the fellow cacophoners

…sometimes I think it’s best

if we just take a breath
