Heart of Gold

Sun to SunA heart made of gold is a heavy thing to bear

But of naught else would I have mine crafted

Wood decays and burns, at all else would tear

Stones unrefined are but elder hearts drafted

Diamonds won’t break, neither can they be reshaped

Stars glow conflagrant and never could be tamed

Of the precious metals, many mimic the moon

But golden is the sun, from which hearts are hewn

This small pearl of ember, reasonably contained

Understandably, however, may become enflamed

No two are alike though they complement

Closer to the whole from which they were rent

It is said, “from ashes to ashes, from dust to dust”

That is to say, “copper to tarnish, iron to rust”

But the golden we live on, this I truly believe

From sun to sun, incandescent and heavy
