On the Backs of Vagabonds

The air I breathe is stifling me

I swear I’ll run away when I’ve got all I need to pave

The safe road, brick by brick, stone by stone

And then I realize the ground ends at the sky

So I’ll affix some wings and catch the warm breeze in spring

But for now in the cold, in the winter, I fold

Into the hollow, the places snow can’t follow

I’ll fold into the earth and pretend it knows what I’m worth

When the warm breeze heals winter’s freeze

I shall emerge ready to purge

The flight from my soul, the whimsy and droll

But from disuse, flight seems so abstruse

Once again my supple wings bend

Long awaited, ill-fated

I won’t take flight again

So ignore those who failed to raise the sail

Who refuse to stand, to strike up the band

There will always be tempest to lay you to rest

So face the storm headlong while your wings are still strong

And take to the sky, it’s been yours the whole time

This Kingdom built on the backs of vagabonds

We few know where we belong
