All I Lack

Atop the glassy surface

Of the local pond

A child sits in a canoe

Just a canoe to me and you

But listen to his heart race

Hear his whimsy-song

It’s a pirate’s life for him

His ship is alive with a vim

Yo-ho, the sea is calling

Hoist the colors high

Signal with a cannon-blast

The new captain’s era is nigh

Watch – the scene is enthralling

Face beaming with pride

I see the things his mind cast

His sword swooping from side to side

When was my last sea-battle?

Facing all my foes

Newspaper hat and a stick

To my edge of mind these thoughts wick

Now each of my joints rattle

Aching from the mist

How I wish I could go back

This new captain has all I lack
