Still Looking West

In this awkward ebullience

When tears start to swell in awkward instance

I overthink every single sentence

And come up with counter-arguments

In some strange self-defense

Yet no one is challenging me

And everyone sees the things I see

I nearly feel like falling to one or both knees

It’s easier to give in and simply be

But then I find a nearby tree

It’s more awkward than all the rest

And I’d daresay it is the best

Not quite as tall, but it still looks west

And it doesn’t grow straight, but it’s still a test

And I recognize I have not confessed

Mayhaps it has been prominence

Or mayhaps I forget Providence

Or mayhaps both, to different degrees

Either way, we both know this is not about trees

When all my metaphor has been undressed

You’ll still find me looking west
